Quit getting in your own way.

What beats most creatives out is not that they’re not good enough or that they don’t have a great idea, its that they’re too afraid to admit to themselves and others what they want and start going after it.

If I asked you what is it you wanted out of life, chances are you know straight away in your heart but your head would get involved before you could answer and shut you down. You’d come up with some lame answer instead and hide away that thing inside you that you really want to do.

Maybe it goes back to your parents not supporting you or instilling confidence in you. Maybe it was a teacher or a friend who made some throwaway comment that ripped through you to the core and has had you locked up unable to follow what your heart wants ever since. I know what mine was. Mr Green, my year 6 music teacher telling me I wasn’t as good as my older sister who was a much much better musician than I ever could hope to be. Those words sat in the back of my head for years and stopped me chasing down what I wanted and made me play safe without ever realising it.

Whoever it was and whatever they said its now controlling you in ways you can’t imagine.

Life’s to short to listen to the bullshit reasonings of others who don’t want you to chase your dreams. You are literally living their life if you do.

So stop getting in your own way and not admitting to what you want to achieve and go out there and do it.

To borrow from my all time favourite quote…

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world

Playing small and getting in your own way because someone said something to you once that made you feel inadequate is no way to live. Embrace who you are, admit to yourself what it is you want out and life and go get after it before you’re too old and are left with nothing but regrets.
